Orange Cakes

At this time, most of the shopping malls and public places have put up their decorations to usher in the Chinese New Year of the dragon. What I love most is the variety of mandarin oranges available during this season. I love oranges and I drink orange juice almost everyday at breakfast. I love to use them in my bakes too.

One of The Cookie Cat's popular bakes is the Orange Syrup Cake. Every time I bake this cake, the song "I'm beautiful, in every single way" will be playing in my head because the cake is beautiful, moist, gorgeous, and most importantly, delicious.

This is the orange cake before the syrup is poured over it.

One whole orange (juice and rind) goes in the cake and I use another whole orange (juice and rind) to make the syrup. So, you can really taste the orange in this cake, and the syrup (where I use less sugar) makes the cake moist.

Well, if you are not a big fan of syrup, then you can opt for just the orange cake. We do bake the orange cake in the usual round or square pans. We do smaller cakes in the rectangular foil pans too. These are popular for tea time on any day.

Hmmm...let's have some for tea now :)

The theme is green and white for these "hantaran" or wedding cupcakes. I had put calla lillies on these Classic Butter cupcakes and piped white dots royal icing on the green fondant too.

Classic Butter Cake

The cake below is a one kg Classic Butter cake frosted with butter cream icing. The customer just let me do any Christmas themed design on the cake. I always love red and green (err..The Cookie Cat's colours :)). So, here's the outcome..

Steamed Fruit Cake

We have always been selling our steamed fruit cakes as they are i.e. without any icing. This is because the cakes are just lovely as they are, rich and moist :) For this Christmas, a customer has requested that we cover the cake with fondant and decorate it with poinsettia.

I use honey to coat the cake before covering it with fondant because I don't have apricot jam (I have to read up on this as this is my first time using fondant to cover a fruit cake).

Gingerbread Cookies

What is Christmas without the all time favourite Gingerbread man cookies? The cookies are good on their own but look lovely with the royal icing decoration.

Turn the cookies around and decorate them as reindeer cookies :)

Gosh, time really flies this year. It's been a year of changes at The Cookie Cat, with the relocation of business and all. But I'm now more focused in doing what I love to do and that's baking! With the tremendous support from all of you, I've been as busy as ever during this time of year.

I just finished baking and decorating these Christmas themed chocolate chip cookies today. A customer ordered them for a Christmas party at her office.

We have also recently packed some goodies for another office Christmas party. Each goodies pack has our best selling chocolate fudge brownies, red velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing, and mocha chunk cookies. The goodies were distributed to the staff at their Christmas dinner.

I'm baking butter cakes now where some will be decorated with Christmas themes. I will post the photos at the next update. Hmmm...I'll be writing more nowadays as moving back home gives me that peace of mind and environment where I can write.

To be honest, we're not quite sure we'll win at all, but it doesn't even matter— having been to almost all the places on this list (and meeting the people who run them), this little 2 year old space in Subang Jaya is well proud to be in such great company! It's our birthday yet again! The Cookie Cat turns 2 years old today— which means closing up our little bake shop in Subang Jaya and moving back home for a new beginning. My mother Z will be baking from home and she's pretty excited about it. Just in case you're curious:

Q: Why close the shop? Is business bad?

A: Not at all, we're grateful to be regularly blessed with awesome customers and familiar faces :) It's simply because we want to move back home, that's all.

Q: Why move back home?

A: Well for starters, we've been home less and less. I suppose after two years in a small shop, we do get homesick. If we're at home more I'd imagine some of the things we could do would be to

chill out on the couch
play with kittens in the back garden
push furniture around
maybe have friends over
experiment with more recipes
open up a flea market on weekends once in awhile
make delivery trips according to custom orders
make delivery trips according to areas, eg. Putrajaya
make delivery trips to offices (would you like it if we packed lunch for you & colleagues?)
look into supplying baked goodies for other places

— all in between baking for you and everyone else. By going back to our roots, the possibilities seem endless, and that's what we find most exciting.

Q: Where is home?

A: We live in Sri Hartamas— right between the Damansara suburbs and the KL city center— so we personally feel this makes us far more accessible for pick-ups and deliveries compared to Subang Jaya.

Q: Does this mean I can't buy just one cookie anymore?

A: Of course you can! Even if Z is busy with custom orders, chances are we'll still have a few jars of fresh cookies in our kitchen just for people like you :) Just text, email or call TheCookieCat to ask what she has.

It is already October 2011 and the quote on my Power Within desk calendar aptly says "Focus your strength and energy into what you do best and approach every challenge with determination". Exactly my thoughts especially in the past few months when I start to look back at what The Cookie Cat has accomplished for the past two years.

The Cookie Cat's major business is still from orders that we received for custom cookies, cakes, cupcakes, and brownies for celebration of birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and for corporate gifts and baskets. Some of you would have noticed that I would be busy baking at the shop till late at nights (even on days when the shop is empty!).

I would therefore like to focus on custom orders and deliver The Cookie Cat's goodies out to clients. I would also be exploring in putting out our goodies at certain places. To strengthen the focus and for more flexibility especially in terms of time, I have decided to operate the baking activities out of The Cookie Cat's home instead of the shop in Subang Jaya. Part of our home is being converted into a working cum baking studio. So The Cookie Cat will be moving out of Casa Tiara before end of this year.

The Cookie Cat Day Out!

The Cookie Cat will be attending 'A Day Out With MAKNA Kids: Bring Cheers & Share The Pain' at The Wet World in Shah Alam tomorrow! (That's Saturday the 1st of October).

The event is organized by our dear friend Dr Azma and team under Together We Can Make a Difference. So don't come find me at the shop. Instead you can join me at The Wet World or call TheCookieCat at 019.35.36.35.0! Anyone can come. The program starts at 8 in the morning.

For the event, I baked sunshine cookies for the kids. These are sugar cut-out cookies and I drew the happy sunshine on the cookies using royal icing - Z

After drawing the happy faces, I left the cookies out for the royal icing to dry. I just can't help but smile looking at these cookies :)

The cookies are then sealed in plastics and decorated with doilies and ribbons.

All the sunshine cookies go into a basket, ready to bring some cheer to the kids :)

Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri

We had been super duper busy completing all orders for Hari Raya that we forgot about an update in our blog. It is not too late to wish all our Muslim friends and customers a Selamat Hari Raya. We hope that everyone had a happy and joyous celebrations with their loved ones.

The shop was closed for two weeks but we started taking orders again during the second week. This 3 kg orange was delivered for a department staff celebration of Hari Raya.

Time flies when you enjoy doing what you do. It's been almost two years since I started The Cookie Cat; and the support that we received from all of you was tremendous!! The Cookie Cat family can't ever thank all of you enough :)

During this period, I have been able to assess our strengths and weaknesses and explore the opportunities and potentials. I have some plans in terms of our operations going forward where I would like to focus on baking and supply of our goodies. This is what we enjoy and what we do best and this is where we want to improve and grow.

Next month is already the holy month of Ramadhan. Muslims will be fasting during the period before celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri at the end of the month. The Cookie Cat shop operated till 9 pm last year during Ramadhan. However for this year, operating hours at the shop will be from 12 noon till 5 pm. I will be baking more from The Cookie Cat home in Sri Hartamas. For those of you in KL, you can arrange for pick up of your goodies from Sri Hartamas too!

So, that's the end of my update for now :)

Painting the town Red Velvet!

Our red velvet cakes and cupcakes have been painting the town red (of course!!). They're moist and yummy; and we frost them with cream cheese icing.

Just to share our recent bakes for celebrations of birthdays, wedding anniversaries, reunions, or for no reason at all...just for one to indulge :)

Spongebob party for a princess... or a belated Mother's Day write up

I've known the mother for a while, a lovely petite lady whom some thought to be only in her teens :) I'm not sure how many miscarriages that she had gone through in trying to conceive a child. But after several attempts, a beautiful baby girl was born. She was aptly named Shya Putri (where "Putri" means Princess). After all the mother had gone through, lovely Putri is a miracle baby...and I feel so proud to do this birthday cake in celebration of her first birthday recently :) - Z

This is a 2 kg chocolate cake with chocolate icing and decorated with edible images of Spongebob and friends. From the photos that mommy subsequently put up for us to see, the whole party was themed in yellow and brown Spongebob decorations :)

Mommy was worried that the cake would not be enough for the guests. So she requested for some mini cupcakes as well. These are lemon mini cupcakes in Spongebob yellow and brown (chocolate icing) theme colours of course.

Life is a blessing, as this friend always says :)

They just came back from performing their Umrah. This red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting was ordered as a surprise to celebrate their homecoming as well as their 25th wedding anniversary. A lovely couple, blessed with beautiful children, and showered with love from family and friends. Life is a blessing indeed :)

In addition to the above red velvet cake, I was requested to bake a whole peanut butter and white chocolate blondie to celebrate the birthday of the couple's family member on that same day. It was also a delightful surprise for her. The blondie was gone in a jiffy at the party so much so the birthday girl didn't have enough to herself. Our friend ordered another one the following week for the birthday girl to enjoy. Extra love for her!

Mother's Day Promotions

Mother's Day is just another month away. We will be having some promotions so that you can share our goodies to celebrate that special day with your loved ones. The promotions will be done through The Cookie Cat's page on Facebook. Effective 18 April 2011 until 30 April 2011, for certain updates that we put up on Facebook, the first few persons who make comments to the update will be entitled to buy our goodies at a certain discount. The number of persons, the type of goodies and the amount of discount would be mentioned during the update. With that entitlement, you can e-mail us to confirm your order and date of pick-up. Last date for pick up of orders will be on Mother's Day i.e. 8 May 2011.

Besides Mother's Day, next month is also the time for weddings as there will be school holidays again. The following wedding cake was done a few months back. It's a rich butter cake covered with fondant icing. The design was given to us by the groom as the cake was one of his "hantaran" items to the bride.

We were thinking, instead of the usual cakes and cupcakes, sugar cut out cookies would also be great for weddings and party favours. We made these sugar cut out cookies for a mother's birthday. But they would be excellent as "bunga telur" or "hantaran" items. We can also ice edible image on our cookies!

Then there's a second time

and you try to improve each time :) This is supposed to be a beetle car! Does it look like one? My daughter said that it looks a furry beetle :D Anyway, I am still proud of myself. The end product looks simple but I had to do my research by looking at so many photos of the beetle, at so many angles of the car design before I was able to shape and ice the cake.

To bake the cake, I had used the same car pan that I used for the first blue car. But to achieve the rounded roof for the beetle (as the pan had a flat squarish roof for the car), I put another layer of cake and sculpt the rounded top.

When I was baking this, several customers at the shop had assumed that the cake was for a boy. This classic butter cake was for a young lady who turned twenty-four on 30th March :) - Z

The groom was so into photography that the bride decided to give these cupcakes as her hantaran to him. The designs for each item were given to us by the customer. We hand-made the cupcake toppings out of fondant based on the designs given.

If you have a friend who loves ducks and has a whole collection of duck decorations, then this would be a great birthday cake to get for him or her :) Our customer has ordered this cake for such a friend. We later learned that the birthday girl loved the deco so much that she didn't want to cut the cake!!

Anyway, someone else had also commented that this cake could also be for a duck themed baby shower party. That would be great too ya :D

Just a note, the cake is our classic butter cake with buttercream icing. The ducks are hand made out of fondant. So are the cut out flowers :) We only use pure high grade butter for our cakes, so they're always really rich and yummy!

It was almost one year ago when we first introduced our The Purr... fect Sandwich. A hugh chunk of ice cream with oozing chocolate sauce, sandwiched between our warm soft cookies :)

Besides the above sandwich, we have other double comfort goodies that we have been serving at The Cookie Cat for a while i.e. The Blondie Sundae Fun and The Brownie Sundae Fun. You can have a choice of warm blondie or brownie as the base, topped with ice cream, chocolate or strawberry syrup (chocolate syrup has always been the popular choice), and crushed cookies :) These are absolutely yummy and a treat that you should not miss!

There's always a first time

When I first baked a 3-D cake using this car shaped pan, the whole cake crumbled. I had never thought of the pan again (hmmm, that was almost two years ago) until someone made a last minute order for a car designed cake recently. She didn't ask for a 3-D cake but I thought I'd take the chance with the pan again. Luckily the cake came out good this time!

As this is my first attempt at doing a car, the design is pretty basic. Nevertheless, I'm proud of myself and am definitely going to attempt improvements on the design going forward :) - Z

Saying I love you

Being the romantic fool I am, I feel that if you are able to say "I love you" to the person you love, you should feel so blessed. There should not be a special day to express your love because everyday is so special when you're in love :) Nevertheless, we are only humans..sometimes we forget, sometimes we overlook, and sometimes we take our love ones for granted. However, many remember their loved ones today and have chosen to say "I love you" with our cupcakes, cookies and brownies :)

Butter cakes are always so delicious and versatile. You can have them made up for special occasions or just eat them plain. I (Z here by the way) always enjoy them plain with tea or coffee.

Just to share our recent bakes of butter cakes where we have been requested to do :-

for a mother's birthday
for no reason at all! Dad loves butter cake and kids love chocolate. So mommy has requested us to put chocolate icing on the butter cake. It's just for all of them to enjoy :)

We were quite excited about doing the lucky draw winners the old-fashioned way. Pen, paper, scissors, messy handwriting, and some papercuts.

As we mentioned earlier, everyone who Liked the draw doubled their chances of winning.

And there goes all the names into the cup.

Of course Z the matriarch had the honours. She had to take a break from icing some cupcakes to choose a piece of paper at random.

Elli Suraya Rozlee was the first name she picked!

Strangely dissatisfied with only granting one winner to the lucky draw, we suddenly decided to draw TWO more names to make it a Top 3. This means we've tripled our prizes! And the official winners list of our very first birthday lucky draw are:

We'll be closed from Tuesday, 7 September until Wednesday, 15 September for Aidilfitri celebrations. Already the shop is starting to look sleepier over the weekend. We've stopped baking cupcakes, so there'll only be cookies, brownies, blondies, sandwiches and hot meals in the shop till we're open again. Why the winding down? It's not that we've been slacking. Instead, our Raya orders have been overwhelming and deserve most of our attention. We wouldn't want anyone to be celebrating Aidilfitri with delayed cookie jars! It's been crazy keeping up with things. In fact, people are even taking our brownies and cookies on flights to Tanzania, Riyadh, Pakistan, and Houston Texas to share with their loved ones!

Today's surprise was a customer coming in to pick up her order, but decided on a whim to pick up the ENTIRE pan instead. So now we're baking more cream cheese brownies, and while waiting, we're getting back to work with these mountains of cookies.

A custom birthday cake order from a customer for her friend's birthday. She told us that her friend loves cats and the colour purple. This is what we came up with:

Yes, purple cats running on and around a rich butter cake. And Kaka is a nickname, of course!

Also, a regular customer of ours (vegetarian, loves our french toast) decided to mix it up a little a few days ago on her latest visit. She ordered thank-you cupcakes for her veterinarian, who went to great lengths to treat her cat. And so, here we have again coincidentally enough, MORE cats just a few days apart. We couldn't have made this up even if we wanted to (except the yummy stuff)!

But every day's a surprise here. It's one of the billions of reasons why we love what we do.

We've had a few people asking us for photos of our hot meals. Here's what we had today (Sunday) at the shop, spaghetti bolognese. The highlight of this hot meal is the really yummy beef sauce; it has just a hint of fire. We figured this demand for photos was just a great excuse as any for us to eat some ourselves...

A lucky guy had received these punk and rock band themed cupcakes for his birthday recently. His girlfriend had ordered them as he was a big fan of the rock scene. Of course we were thrilled to be part of the celebration. These were butter, orange, and chocolate cupcakes topped with buttercream icing. We were proud of our effort and extremely happy to hear that he loved the cupcakes!

It's the start of school break! This means we've been involved in lots of teacher-student love.

We received orders for several uncut brownies (by the pan!) that a teacher bought for her students.
A group of students also bought some for their favourite teacher.
And a headmistress bought 50 cupcakes to treat her teachers with!

Looks like showing appreciation for your favourite educators isn't just for Teachers Day anymore!

Two sons ordered these cupcakes for their mother, who spent some time this year battling cancer. Like many others, she attended the Relay for Life event organised by National Cancer Society Malaysia over the weekend, and they wanted to surprise her with a few of our treats. We hope she loves them.

L. dropped by to check out the event too! It was manic. The heavy rain in Bukit Jalil definitely did not stop anyone from having fun. The cupcakes were decorated on the fly; had we known purple and yellow were the colours of the day (purple shirts for survivors, yellow for everyone else), we might have reconsidered our cupcake colour scheme. But then again it was a last-minute call, and they were for a mother, not for the event.

For those who've been having trouble making their way to Subang Jaya to check out our little bake shop, we might have a few solutions in the works. We'll update you soonest!

When you need something to perk you up, nothing is more comforting than ice-cream or cookies. To have both would be one of the greatest pleasures! With that, we proudly introduce our new sandwich: The Purr-fect Sandwich! It's our very own chewy cookies sandwiching a huge chunk of ice-cream, molded together with yummy gooey chocolate sauce! YUM.

We're having a little taste-testing today for something you could be seeing on the menu really soon: cream cheese brownies. The taste-testing verdict? AWESOME. We're working on the pricing now, and hopefully will start selling it really soon. We already know a bunch of hungry boys eager to try these out.

How has your Mothers Day been?

We've been baking brownies, icing red velvet cupcakes, and also giving away these sets of treats to the five lucky winners of the BFM SMS contest. They were mostly male winners excited to give the cupcakes and cookies to their mothers, wives, and wives/mothers.

Speaking of wives, mothers, and wives/mothers; families of all kinds trickled into our shop today. We honestly can't remember if there were ever so many children in The Cookie Cat before. It was a lot of fun watching them choose what they wanted to eat! Enjoy the photos and have a great week.

These photos were taken last Sunday. Regulars and familiar faces showed up with novels, laptops, work talk, new friends, and even knitting. It was so chill, definitely one of our most exciting weekends.

May 1 is tomorrow, so happy Labour Day to all our friends and customers! Thank you for showing us lots of love & letting us love you back. We've gotten unbelievably far on just word-of-mouth alone, and we really feel that all our labour would have been pointless without you.

Like the new site design? It's a Mother's Day surprise from me & T, and I'm also working on a complete menu + pricing section coming soon! The main objective of this new design is to showcase larger images, and getting rid of that sempit feeling our old design eventually had. I guess The Cookie Cat is growing up :)
Mark your calendars for May 5. The Cookie Cat will be interviewed by our favourite radio station, BFM 89.9 in their Open For Business segment! And by "The Cookie Cat" I mean Queen Z, of course. I might be tagging along too, but not sure yet.
We've been brainstorming on several contests and promo ideas for you to have fun with! We'll probably unleash the first one sometime after the BFM interview.

As her daughter loves handbags, a mother ordered this cake for her birthday:) To any mother, her child will forever be her baby..no matter how old he or she is. This mother has written this quote "Today my little girl celebrates her 23rd birthday....How time flies..still remember holding this tiny little thing when she came into this world bringing us so much joy...holding her hands to her first day at school, shared her achievements with pride, watch with anxiety as she turns into a teenager and now she is a woman raring to go for all that she desires..". Hmmm...my own little big girl will be celebrating her 23rd birthday soon. We all share the same feeling...

Note: The base is a 1.5 kg chocolate cake. The handbags are made out of cupcakes :)

Ordered by a customer for her friend's birthday. The birthday college girl (not a boy as stated earlier..) is a die hard Manchester United fan (obviously!). Tomorrow these ten cupcakes will be traveling to Melaka to surprise her.

Funnily enough, these cupcakes caused such a stir in The Cookie Cat! Our boy customers were having their meals in the shop and burst into heated football talk (this team is better than that team, etc etc). They even took pictures! And a regular, Fahmi, went crazy when he walked in and saw these! He promised to come in his MU jersey next week to collect his newly-placed, very similar order.

(The Cookie Cat isn't a die-hard supporter for any team! We just love making football fans happy.)

Man, we haven't set up booths since the days before our shop. Long-time customers will remember our days in Mont Kiara & especially Amcorp Mall (a rather amusing time for us; we were just starting up & had to learn really fast). To those procrastinating about visiting us in Subang Jaya, this crazy weekend off Jalan Duta should be perfect!

The festival & new arts space promises to be exciting (see what's going on here). In fact, we're completely convinced you will need a sugar rush to keep you going through the day, so come find us for cupcakes, brownies, blondies (like brownies, but with peanut butter & white chocolate), & oversized soft cookies— yummy yet affordable as always!

We're still planning which cupcake flavours to stock. So far we're leaning towards:

Once upon a time, there were two sisters aged 4 and 3. The older sister wanted machine gun cupcakes while the younger sister loved princess cupcakes. We were confident that the younger sister would love our princess cupcakes but we were not too sure if the elder sister would even recognize the machine guns on her cupcakes :) But she did recognize them! and so did the other children in the kingdom who came to celebrate at their birthday party :D They had a great time where our big chewy choc chip cookies were also given out to the guests. (a recap for our day off)

1. We received an order for music-themed cupcakes! It was a fun challenge, and totally worth it. The birthday girl called us up saying that she felt bad giving the cupcakes to her friends to eat, because she thought they were so pretty.

2. We experimented with perfecting our Red Velvet recipe. Now it's a seriously better cupcake than ever before.

3. Our oversized brownies have been around for awhile, but are a hit this week :) So are most of our daily comfort foods, especially the rice dishes. We're happy if you're happy. See you next week!

we tried making our own fries on wednesday from scratch, with different herbs / spices. we also tried baked potato with cheese. they tasted good, but we still have a lot to work on before adding it to the menu permanently, if at all.

chewy chocolate chip cookies were a new addition in conjunction with the shop opening, and somehow became a daily hit. they go for RM1.50 each. we need to refill the cookie jar almost every day now, and since the cookies are so big, children have to use both hands to hold one while eating. (they love it)

We were testing out the cappuccino cupcakes at The Cookie Cat :) They came out lovely. So, we'll start selling them from next week i.e. Wednesday onwards.

Talking about next week, The Cookie Cat would be closed from Friday 27/11 till Sunday 29/11 in celebration of Hari Raya Aidiladha and for a private function. Come in for your cravings on Monday!

I had set the opening of The Cookie Cat on 11/11/2009 because of the nice date. Little did I realize the huge effort that I had to put in to get the shop ready by that date..chasing the contractor..chasing the suppliers for on time delivery of furniture and appliances..running around for shelves, plates, cups, bowls etc etc till the eve of opening. All at the expense of thorough menu planning and preparation. Nevertheless, The Cookie Cat had a great first day :) thanks to the support of friends and fans out there...and the walk in customers.

We had learnt so many things in the last 5 days..thanks to the feedback received from all of you. We had also received compliments on the cupcakes...and it's such a great feeling to see some coming back for more of the cupcakes :)

The best was from a lady who called me (with this joy and excitement in her voice) to inform that the butter cupcakes are so yummy! She said that she's never been a fan of cupcakes before because they are only nice to look at but are normally hard and sweet. Well, now The Cookie Cat's cupcakes are her favourite. She came in the next day to buy more :) ..this time she bought the orange and chocolate ones too.

For those of you who have been following our Twitter or know us in person, then you know that we've been planning to move out of our home kitchen into a proper shop space for awhile now. And it seems that time is tomorrow! After months of toil, ladies, gentlemen, and hungry bellies:

So the new home of The Cookie Cat bakery-slash-minicafe is done, and waiting for your visit. We begin operating on 11/11, from 10 to 10. Come for cupcakes, coffee, cookies, tea, sandwiches, real fruit juice and more! We're still working on getting wifi though.

I made these crocodile cupcake toppers from fondant. The cupcakes are for a little boy whose favourite soft toy is a crocodile that he takes to sleep with:) When the mother requested me to make the cupcakes for his birthday, I was thinking... crocodile from butter cream would be superb for the kids. But the mom wanted something out of fondant as the cakes would be individually boxed as gifts for the guests. The whole birthday party will be crocodile themed ... and there will be a clown to entertain the kids too! Anyway, I had fun making the toppers yesterday :)

I received a call yesterday for an urgent order of cupcakes for a girlfriend's birthday that is today. Initial request was for alphabets topped cupcakes...but he called again to add two Hello Kitty designed cupcakes as the girlfriend loves Hello Kitty:) He was happy when he picked up the cakes at lunch time...sorry that I forgot about the candles....

For a change, I tried out something new today...the cappuccino cupcakes. For the topping, I use white chocolate, butter, sour cream, and icing sugar. Hmmm...they are yummy :) Coffee lovers would love these cupcakes...These will definitely be one of the items on the menu for my cafe :)
